A scathing drama of “mother-love” gone awry portrays the lengths to which widowed Mrs. Phelps will go to keep her “boy’s” attachment to, if not love for, her. Though son Robert ultimately gives up a devoted fiancée and holds fast to the “silver cord” of affection for his mother, firstborn David brings home Christina, a woman who is not so easily dissuaded by The Widow Phelps’s machinations in the name of love.
November 5, 1947, performance was a benefit for the Holly Hill School for the Blind.
Written by Sidney Howard. First produced on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre in 1926.
